"Meetings in Russia" Festival of Russian Theatres from CIS and Baltic Countries
About festival

The first in Russia Festival of Russian-language theatres from near and far abroad. Organized yearly since 1998, in April

Founders:  Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, Culture Committee of St. Petersburg, St. Petersburg Division of the Theatre Workers Union of the Russian Federation (All-Russian Theatre Association), BALTIC INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL CENTER Foundation, BALTIC HOUSE Theatre-Festival.

The Festival is supported by the Federal Agency for CIS Problems, Compatriots Living Abroad and International Humanitarian Cooperation (RosSotrudnichestvo), Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of States – CIS Participants

The goal of the Festival is consolidation of culture relations with Russian citizens living in different countries.

The Festival program includes the best performances of Russian-language theatres from former Soviet republics and other states.  Due to the Meetings in Russia new companies working in Russian language were organized in many countries and international Russian-language theatre festivals were arranged, as well.

Among constant participants in the Festival are Uzbekistan Youth Theatre, Mikhail Chekhov Russian Theatre in Riga (Latvia), K.S. Stanislavski State Russian Drama Theatre (Republic of Armenia), Russian Theatre in Estonia and others.

In 2008, during the anniversary, tenth, Festival Kirill Lavrov Award was presented for the first time.   It was established in honor of famous Russian actor, People Artist of the USSR, to encourage artistic activities of Russian theatres outside of Russia for staging new performances. The prize adds higher status to the winner in its country and abroad.

The Festival is also notable for its educational and elucidative programs.   Each year St. Petersburg pedagogues carry out different workshops, series of lectures for young actors from Russian-language theatres, present classical and modern Russian culture.  In the frame-work of the Festival joint projects and performances with participation of actors from different countries are realized.

In 2014, an Education Center was organized on the basis of the Festival. It develops and extends activities of the Festival for improving acting technique, mastery of directors and other artistic workers in Russian-language theatres.  Trainings are given both during the Festival and in the “summer school”.


Round-table discussions, conferences are also arranged to learn more about new drama works, tendencies in theatre development, discover new names of actors and directors. The program includes daily discussions with participation of leading critics from Moscow, St. Petersburg, CIS and Baltic countries, and theatre representatives.

The Festival became a loving place of meeting, communication and sharing artistic experience for directors and actors from Russian theatres working near and far abroad.
